Basis Of Product Tax

Basis Of Product Tax

If you have physical store or have sellers from many different states, you are obligated to pay sales tax to those states.  In this scenario, you should use Shipping as the Basis of product tax and have zone definition for each state nexus exist between your business and the state.  For the same scenario, if the product is a service or virtual, then you should use Billing as the basis of product.

If you want to have  one sales tax for one zone and then another tax for all other zones, then use Store as  Basis for product Tax.

Configuring the US state sales tax – single rate (Reference)

Below are steps for creating new zone, zone definition, Tax class, and Tax rate, which we did in class already. You can refer to this post when doing your final project or future personal projects.

FIRST, set your store’s zone properly:
Admin >  Configuration  >  My Store  >  Zone

Choose your country and zone from the lists provided by the edit button.

Here is an example, for setting up taxes for the state of Colorado:

Go to:
Admin >  Locations/Taxes >  Zones Definitions  > Insert

Zone Name: Colorado
Description: Colorado State Sales Tax (or whatever you like)
click on ‘insert’

Click on ‘Details’ after creating a zone
Click on ‘Insert’
Country = United States
Zone = Colorado
Click on ‘insert’

Go to:
Admin > Locations/Taxes > Tax Classes

Click on ‘New Tax Class’
Title = Taxable Goods
Description = Whatever you like
Click on ‘insert’

Go to:   Admin>Locations/Taxes> Tax Rates

Click on ‘New Tax Rate’
Select your zone, ‘Colorado’
Set your tax rate
give it a description, ex: Colorado State Sales Tax
Click on insert

Last, make sure you apply the new tax class that you created (Taxable Goods) to any and all products that you might be charging tax on.

To make this faster when adding new products, in the Admin area, you can select a default Tax Class to be applied to all new products you create, by selecting Catalog>Product Types>(choose a product type)>Edit Layout> Default Tax Class

Category, and Subcategory

Author: Krishnakumar | Filed under: Zen Cart

In order to add products to your site, you will first need at least one category.

Create a category by clicking the “new category” button.

warning: Products must be placed inside categories
You must have at least one category, and all your products must be placed inside categories, otherwise Zen Cart will not work as intended and you may experience various problems, like products not showing up and searching is not working etc.

Now click on the newly created category and decide what you want to do.

Do you want the category to have a subcategory or do you want to add products to the category? There can not be both products and categories in a category, it must contain one or the other. There’s no restriction to how many products or categories you can have in a category though, and there’s also no restriction to how many levels of subcategories you want. The only limitation is your server and how much it can handle.
